About Kelly Ausley-Flores
Kelly Ausley-Flores is a partner in Goranson Bain Ausley’s Austin office and a Board Certified family law attorney. She earned Board Certification in Family Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 2000 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Admitted to the Texas Bar in 1995, Kelly has practiced family law exclusively for more than 30 years and represents clients across Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, Burnet, and Bell counties — many of them 50 or older, financially well-established, and ready for straight-talking, experience-backed counsel.
Her practice is built around the cases that benefit most from technical depth: high-net-worth divorce, complex property division, business interests and retirement portfolios, alimony and spousal maintenance, Collaborative Divorce, family law mediation, and litigation. She is an experienced litigator who can handle the most challenging cases, including those involving contested custody and people with a personality disorder, and a trained mediator and Collaborative Divorce practitioner who helps families protect their finances from the stress and conflict of a prolonged dispute.
Kelly helps clients choose the approach that best accomplishes their goals while reducing unnecessary legal expense. She approaches each case as an opportunity for creative problem-solving, tells clients the truth rather than what they want to hear, and offers the human touch that makes every client feel their issues matter.

What Sets Her Apart
- Three-time “Lawyer of the Year”. Named “Lawyer of the Year” in Austin by Best Lawyers in America three separate times — for Family Law in 2012 and 2017 and for Collaborative Law: Family Law in 2014 — placing her among a small cohort of Texas family lawyers repeatedly identified by peers as the standard of excellence in their market.
- Full continuum of process options. Trained in both Collaborative Divorce and family law mediation, with the litigation experience to handle the most contested cases — clients get to choose the approach that fits their goals, not the one the attorney happens to favor.
- Complex property and financial cases. Three decades focused on high-net-worth and gray divorce, characterization and tracing of separate and community property, business valuation, retirement portfolios, spousal maintenance, and above-guideline child support — the technical depth high-asset cases require.
- Helps shape Texas family law. Has spoken regularly at State Bar of Texas advanced family law programs since 2003, on topics including significant impairment, parental alienation, characterization and tracing, and post-trial drafting — bringing clarity to every case she handles.
- Published voice on gray divorce. Author of GBA’s two most recent gray-divorce pieces — “Why Gray Divorce Is on the Rise After 50” (March 2026) and “Divorcing Later in Life Can Reshape Family Ties” (September 2025) — the public expression of a practice substantially built around clients navigating divorce after 50.
Practice Focus
Kelly focuses her practice on the cases that benefit from sustained technical depth and a measured, strategic approach:
- Gray Divorce. Divorce for spouses 50 and older, where retirement-asset division, long marital histories, accumulated investments and business interests, and adult or near-adult children all shape what a good outcome looks like.
- High Net Worth Divorce. Strategic counsel for divorce involving substantial estates, executive compensation, business interests, retirement portfolios, and significant real estate or investment holdings.
- Complex Property. Characterization and tracing of separate and community property, business valuation, the marital home, and reimbursement claims.
- Collaborative Divorce. A resolution-focused process for couples committed to constructive outcomes — Kelly is a trained Collaborative Divorce practitioner, and GBA has the largest team of trained Collaborative Divorce attorneys in the country.
- Divorce Mediation. Kelly is a trained family law mediator and uses mediation to resolve cases efficiently when both spouses are open to a negotiated outcome.
- High Conflict Divorce. Contested matters involving personality disorders, parental alienation, and other dynamics that require careful courtroom strategy alongside steady client guidance.
- Alimony & Spousal Maintenance. Including above-guideline support cases and the spousal-maintenance issues that arise in long marriages and later-life divorces.
Recognition and Credentials
Kelly is one of Austin’s most-recognized family law attorneys — Board Certified, named “Lawyer of the Year” in Austin by Best Lawyers in America three times (Family Law 2012 and 2017, Collaborative Law 2014), continuously listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Family Law and Collaborative Law since 2012 and for Family Law Mediation since 2024, selected to Texas Super Lawyers every year from 2010 through 2025 — including the Top 10 Texas Super Lawyers list in 2025 — and named to LawDragon’s 500 Leading Family Lawyers from 2024 through 2026.
Beyond her recognition, Kelly is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, and Collaborative Divorce Texas, and a past member of the Family Law Council. She has served on the planning committees of the State Bar of Texas Advanced Family Law Course and the Marriage Dissolution Institute, and as course director for the Family Law Boot Camp.
Kelly also considers the legal education of her clients and colleagues a cornerstone of strong advocacy. Since 2003, she has delivered continuing legal education speeches and papers for the State Bar of Texas on topics including significant impairment, parental alienation, characterization and tracing, child support above the guidelines, and the closing-the-file drafting work that protects clients after a case concludes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Types of Divorce Cases Does Kelly Ausley-Flores Handle?
Kelly focuses on complex family law matters — high-net-worth and gray divorce, intricate property division involving business interests and investment portfolios, spousal maintenance, contested child custody, Collaborative Divorce, and family law mediation. She represents clients in negotiated and collaborative divorce, in mediation, and in contested litigation.
Does Kelly Ausley-Flores Focus on Gray Divorce?
Yes. Gray divorce — divorce involving spouses who are 50 or older — is a substantial focus of Kelly’s practice and the topic of her recent writing for GBA. She brings the experience that comes from three decades handling the financial complexity and family dynamics specific to divorcing later in life, and is candid with clients about what realistic outcomes look like at this stage.
What Dispute-Resolution Processes Does Kelly Use?
Kelly is trained in litigation, Collaborative Divorce, and family law mediation, and routinely works with clients across all three. In Collaborative Divorce, both spouses and their attorneys commit in writing to settling the case without court intervention, often with financial and mental-health neutrals supporting the negotiation. Mediation is a focused, typically one- or two-day negotiation in which a neutral mediator helps the spouses reach agreement. Litigation remains available where negotiation is not viable. Kelly helps clients choose the path that best fits their circumstances and goals.

Beyond the Practice
Kelly’s commitment to service has been a constant alongside her practice. She received the Judge Suzanne Covington Individual Pro Bono Service Award for 100+ hours of service from Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (2018), a Pro Bono Award from the Travis County Women Lawyer’s Association (2018), and earlier Pro Bono Awards from Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (1998 and 1999). She is a long-standing member of the College of the State Bar of Texas Pro Bono section.
In Kelly’s own words, the reason she practices family law is that she believes she is called to this work. “I am passionate about what I do and proud to tell people I practice family law. There is nothing else in the world I would rather be doing.” That sense of vocation shows up in how she works — finding genuine joy in resolving cases, treating every client as if their issues are the only ones that matter, and helping people regain their voice and confidence so they can move forward with clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of direction.
