Position Marks Ongoing Commitment To Excellence In The Industry
DALLAS - The Texas Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), which represents the state's leaders in the field of family law, has selected Kathryn J. Murphy as president for the 2010-2011 slate of officers. Murphy is a partner at Goranson, Bain, Larsen, Greenwald, Maultsby & Murphy PLLC, which has offices in Dallas and Plano, Texas.
In her role, which took effect in August 2010, Murphy will be responsible for presiding at all meetings, planning the goals and objectives of the chapter, supervising the performance of all activities of the chapter and generally supervising the administration of the chapter.
Established in 1981 and currently boasting more than 120 members (fellows), the Texas Chapter is a local extension dedicated to the AAML's national mission: "To encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the cause of matrimonial law, to the end that the welfare of the family and society be protected."
To be selected for membership in the Academy, an attorney must have at least 10 years' experience as a lawyer and have been board certified in family law for five years with at least 75 percent of his or her practice devoted to family (or "matrimonial") law. He or she must also have substantial family law trial experience (with consideration given to the lawyer's ability to settle cases without the necessity of trial). In addition, the peer and judicial recommendation aspect of the admissions process assures the Academy that prospective members demonstrate the highest skill and ethical standards in their respective communities.
"This is a tremendous honor," said Murphy about her new role. "I constantly strive to bring best practices to the legal industry, and more specifically to the family law sector. In accepting this leadership position, I will be able to continue to work with some of the best and brightest family law experts in our state to maximize the reach and resources of the AAML."
Murphy is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and practices in Dallas and Collin County. She is a member of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, the Family Law Council of the State Bar of Texas, and the Family Law Sections of the Dallas Bar and Collin County Bar Associations.
Murphy is the primary researcher and writer of the book, Protecting Your Assets from a Texas Divorce, published in 2005. She also co-authored West Publishing Company's Texas Family Law Practice Guide, a three-volume family law treatise for attorneys that was published in March 2000 and supplemented each year. In addition, she has taught family law at Southeastern Paralegal Institute in Dallas.
Murphy has extensive trial experience in family law, and embraces collaborative law. She is an author and speaker on family law issues, including alimony, child support, premarital agreements, relocation, business valuations, characterization, division of property in Texas, protective orders and electronic evidence.
